Iowa Brides are Asking “When Do I Send Out My Wedding Invitations?”

Updated: Jan 5, 2023

When do I send out my wedding invitations?

You’re hosting your first big event and you’re excited to get your invitations in the mail so you can start working on the wedding day plans!

But… you don’t want to get too excited because there is a pretty standard etiquette around when to send your wedding invitations. Though there is about an 6 week window, you’ll want to pick the week that’s best for your wedding and stick to it.

Most couples will aim to send invitations out between the 2-3 month mark (before the wedding).

Here’s how to determine what’s right for you!

Send Your wedding invitations at the 3 month mark (10-12 weeks before the wedding) if:

Your wedding falls on a holiday weekend (Memorial, Independence, or Labor Day)

Your wedding falls on a particularly busy weekend (Graduations, Spring Break, Football Games)

You're having a destination wedding (Takes more coordination / planning)

You didn’t send save the dates - most guests are not aware of the upcoming date.

Most of your guestlist will be traveling for the wedding

Send your wedding invitations at the 2 month mark (8-9 weeks before the wedding) if:

Most couples will fall under this category, non-holiday, no specific events to plan around.

You sent save the dates and guests already have the date on their calendar

Some guests are traveling, but most are not.

Send your wedding invitations at 6 weeks if:

You sent save the dates and guests already have the date on their calendar

Very few guests are traveling.

Remember, It’s not recommended to send your invitations out before the 3 month mark because it gives guests too much time between receiving the invitation and returning the rsvp. Instead send a save the date if you want to send something out earlier than the 3 months!
